ASTM A516 Carbon Steel Plate Introduction
In order to provide the best possible service to our customers, ANSON Steel stocks ASTM A516 Gr. 70 and ASME SA516 Gr. 70 plates with numerous supplementary requirements included and all noted on the material test certificate supplied with each plate.
ASTM A516 is also known as ASME SA516. The A516 / SA516 standard, its full name is “standard specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, for moderate- and lower-temperature service”, could almost be described as the default material specification for pressure vessel applications particularly outside of Europe and it is widely used by designers and engineers in many market sectors. A grade intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required, and is normally found in moderate and lower temperature applications. All plates over 1-1/2" Thick are required to be normalized. A516 is the most popular pressure vessel grade of steel plate in the industry.
This specification of ASTM A516 covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. According to different strength levels, the plates are available in four grades: Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70. The most common is Grade 70 or called out A516-70. The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements. The steel shall be killed and shall conform to fine austenitic grain size requirements. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation shall be determined by a tension test for the plates.
